Several Gibraltar based online gambling Operators experienced huge disruptions on what is generally a very busy day for them when a fire broke out on the Isle of Gibraltar on Easter Sunday leaving residents of the island without power.
It is thought that the fire was caused by a mechanical fault at Waterport Power Station.
A few online betting companies reported that their customers were unable to gain access to their sites for several hours.
The fire resulted in Gibraltar’s Emergency Services rushing to the scene to evacuate the power station, after which the fire was quickly extinguished.
The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, praised the Emergency Service for their quick response and confirmed that power had been restored to the whole of Gibraltar. Picardo added that the power outrage had lasted for far too long and that any new plans should reflect the lessons of such incidents in order to make sure that they were never repeated.
According to a spokesman for one of the UK bookies, operations at the site were affected with services off for approximately two and a half hours but that the power outage is a freak event that nobody could have predicted. He added that there would be those customers who would claim that they would have backed a winner while there would also be customers who were saved from backing a loser.
Online gambling operators were extremely happy when power was fully restored to Gibraltar by 9.30 pm on Sunday night as Monday was an important day for betting action with several bank holiday football matches and the Irish Grand National scheduled for that day.
